About Me

I am the creator of this website.  If you have any questions about scoliosis, feel free to ask me!  I am a 17 year old girl who has scoliosis.  My spine was curved 36 degrees before I began wearing my Boston brace.  After wearing my brace for four years, my spine is now 17 degrees.  I do not have to wear my brace during the day anymore because my bones have matured.  My doctor told me that I am not required to wear my brace at night anymore but I am reluctant to stop wearing it.  It has helped my back so much that I have decided to keep wearing it every other night.  If you want to read my full story about my scoliosis experience, click on the "My Story" tab.  I hope you like my website!

apparently for kids around the age of 12-14 the degree your spine must be to have surgery is around 40 and because im am almost 13 and i havent had any major growth spirts if my spine gets any worse i may have to probably have surgery (my spine is 37 degrees) so if it gets any worse i will have to have surgery! if i dont wear the brace ALL the time i will maybe have to have surgery. i am really worried about wearing the brace but it is the only way to avoid having spinal surgery. please tell me how to deal with this situation i am in. :)

Wow, it has been a long time. I hadn't realized. When you started this website, I was still in high school. Crazy how time flies. And no problem for sticking around! Since I haven't had many appointments or done much of anything for my back since at least my 2 year post-op mark (2 years ago!), I don't give my back much thought. Keeping up with this website is the main way I remind myself all that my back has taught me. If I stopped talking to and trying to give guidance to others, I'd probably never think about my back. I've gotten so used to the metal, I forget it's there. I also commend you. It's one thing to keep up with the activity of a site, but it's entirely another to run a site, especially for 3 years. I'm impressed that you've stuck with this. Most people give up their websites; it makes me sad.

Thank you for replying, I hope that the brace really does a permanent job. Hearing that your back is so much better and that you don't get any pain is a relief in a way, and gives me hope for myself and other people with scoliosis. I know how hard it is with scoliosis so I'm really happy for you, I hope to be in the same condition as you soon. Thank you once again. :) x

I'm so happy for you as scoliosis isn't easy to live with. I am also a 15 year old girl with scoliosis. I've had it for five years but have only knew for 4 years. I figured out that my curve is very small, 17 degrees but enough to cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Throughout that time, I was not mentored properly and advised in the correct way in order to help me reduce pain and prevent my scoliosis from getting worse. Although the doctors did not advice me in the correct way, I went swimming on a regular basis which helped strengthen my back muscle and in turn my posture. Now I wear a back brace and have been for a few months. I feel that my pain has completely gone since I've been wearing it but worry that once I take it off permanently it will continue to hurt. Apart from that concern, I am very happy with the brace as it also shows me the correct posture and standing position. I will continue to wear it for about a year and a half. I also do yoga for scoliosis which I have only been doing for a month, I don't see any difference in me since doing it but hope to see a difference in the future. This month I will also begin Physiotherapy for the first time ever! I am very happy with everything at the moment and hope that I continue to be. I want to ask you, considering the brace helped you, do you think you will have a lot of pain in the future? I'm worried that I will constantly have pain in the future despite the early actions that I have taken to manage my scoliosis. And what can you do to prevent scoliosis from worsening? Thank you for your time! :)

Wow, that's awesome. Congratulations. I must admit, I'm a bit jealous. Just be careful though. Keep an eye on your back because after my doctor said I was done and could stop wearing it was when my back got worse. Although, my back was a lot worse than yours. Not another appointment for 5 years? I wish I had that. I have another one year from now. Again, congrats! You're definitely an inspiration!

Thanks! I'm trying to stay strong. My parents usually freak out more than I do (like when they foud out I was flat footed. I said okay and they were flipping out) again, we're hoping for the best :)
