I am Jessica and I am 12 years old. My mom's side of the family has quite a few cases of Scoliosis, my aunt and my grandma has it. I found out that I had mild Scoliosis late last year when a nurse came in check for Scoliosis during school. I never thought that I would have to wear a back brace. I went to the doctors and they decided to monitor my back. After a few weeks of monitoring, the doctor told me that if my curve worsened, I might have to wear a brace until I stopped growing (which would be about a year and a half). Then at my next appointment, my curve was around 20 degrees. The doctor said that there was big chance my back was going to get worse. If I wore a brace, then my back most likely wouldn't get any better but would remain the same. My parents didn't want to take that risk. So, now I have had to wear a back brace for a year and a bit and it is very uncomfortable. People tell me that if I don't wear my brace now, my back will be curved for my the rest of my life. I have to wear it for 23 hours every day. The only time I don't have to wear it is in the shower. Now, my curve is 29 degrees. I just keep thinking that it could be a lot worse!
Thank you so much Jessica for letting me post your story!
